Symptoms and TMJ pains
Someone with TMJ might experience one or more of the following:
- Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders
- Headaches/ or dizziness
- Problem when trying to open the mouth wide
- Unevenness or deviation in movements of the jaw
- Locking or sticking, or a feeling of the jaw being out of position – may be prolonged or brief
- Clicking sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth
- Chewing problem
- Ringing in the ears
- Pain or feeling of pressure behind the eyes or a feeling of ear blockage

TMD classification
TMJ disorders are usually classified into three clinical diagnostic groups:
- Jaw muscle disorder characterised by painful movement
- Articular disc displacement
- Arthralgia or arthritis
